BURNARD OF LUXULYAN

The marriage of Thomas Gilles and Constance is recorded at Luxulyan in 1667. The surnames of the brides are not given in the parish registers in that period but the 1701 will of Christopher Burnard of Luxulyan names, among others, “my Sister Constance Gyles”.[1]

The will of the older Christopher Burnard (buried 1620) mentions his brother John Burnard and the poor of Blisland, perhaps indicating an origin in that parish where records of many Burnards can be found. The testator also mentions his brother-in-law Thomas Hornabrook of Lanivet.[2] The will of a Thomas Hornabrook of Lanivet was written and proved in 1622.[3]

[17] Luxulyan parish registers. The 1701 will of Christopher Burnard makes a Peter Symons his executor and appoints “my beloved friend John Symons”, father of Peter, as guardian and trustee. The probate documents indicate that Peter was a nephew of Christopher, but this is implausible chronologically as Peter was not baptised until 1699. His parents John Symons and Mary Gatty were married at Luxulyan in 1698/99. Mary was baptised at Tywardreath in 1673, daughter of Nicholas and Wilmot (Grose) Gatty. John was baptised at Luxulyan in 1663, son of Peter and Katherine Symons. The record of the marriage of Peter and Katherine in 1662 does not give the bride’s surname but seemingly she was Katherine Burnard, sister of Christopher, making the younger Peter Symons (the child appointed executor in 1701) a grandnephew of Christopher.
