BELL OF NETHER DENTON

The will of Margaret Bell, written in 1760 and proved in 1767, mentions many relatives and helps to clarify some of the connections of this family.[1]

[4] See the discussion in the account of the Snowdon family. The will of George Bell mentions “my Grand Child Elizabeth Snawdon”.

John Bell of Closegill was apparently married more than once as the will of his son James mentions “my Half Brother John Bell at the Lodges in the Parish of Nether Denton”. James’s will also mentions some Scaife relatives but their exact relationship is not immediately apparent.

[7] The 1760 will of Margaret Bell mentions her deceased brother William Bell and his children George, Mary and Ann. Children of these names with a father William Bell were baptised at Brampton between 1726 and 1729 and William Bell and Margaret Fish were married there in 1725/26: England Marriages, 1538–1973 (www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NVMN-QL2); England, Cumbria, Parish Registers, 1538-1990 (www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:H9QW-56ZM). One William Bell, late of the office of excise, was buried on 14 Aug 1752 at Nether Denton. It may be noted that George, son of Robert and Jane (Bell) Snowdon, was a collector of excise.
