SYKES OF HOLBECK
There are multiple baptisms
which could relate to the Joseph Sykes who married Martha Holmes in 1818, and
his parentage is not yet clear. The use of the names Edwin and Emma among the
children of Joseph and Martha is suggestive of a connection with John and Sarah
(Mitchell) Sykes of Holbeck, married in 1831, whose children also included an
Edwin and an Emma. One of the witnesses at the marriage of John and Sarah was a
Frederick Sykes, who was probably the Frederick born in 1802, son of James and
Elizabeth Sykes of Holbeck.
Martha Holmes, wife of Joseph
Sykes, was born at Beeston about 1800 according to the 1851 census returns. Her
parentage has not been definitely ascertained but it seems probable that she
was a daughter of Joseph and Ann (Fisher) Holmes who were married at Rothwell
in 1795. The reasons are:
Joseph and Martha (Holmes) Sykes had a son called Joseph Holmes Sykes
The mother of Ann (Fisher) Holmes was named Martha
Ann, wife of Joseph Holmes, was buried at Beeston in 1811
Esther, daughter of Joseph and Ann Holmes of Beeston, was born in 1810,
and the marriage of Esther Holmes of Beeston to William Roger in 1830 was
witnessed by a Joseph Sykes
