RUNDLE OF WEEK ST MARY

The wife of Richard Pearce of Warbstow was given as “Mary Rindel” at their marriage in 1736/37. A clue to Mary’s parentage is in the will of Jane Northy of Jacobstow, widow, written in 1752. The testator’s legacies included fifteen shillings to each of “Richard Pearces four Children of Warbstow Called by the Names of John, Henry, Richard, and Thomas” and her best apparel to “Joanna wife of Jeffery Wakley Honer Baker wife of Thomas Baker & to Mary wife of Richard Pearce”.[1] Honor Baker and Mary Pearce appear to have been sisters. Thomas Baker and “Honner Rendell” were married at Jacobstow in 1729. The baptisms of Honor in 1701 and Mary in 1706 took place at Week St Mary. The spelling of the surname of their father Henry is variously given, with Rundle or Rundel at his marriage and children’s baptisms, but Rendle in his probate record.
