LOBB OF WARLEGGAN

Robert Lobb was probably a close relative of George Lobb of Warleggan who, together with Martha Harris and Mary Harris, was a party in an indenture of 1593 relating to property at Trevorder Parks.[1] George Lobb married Martha Harris later the same year and Robert Lobb married Mary Harris in 1596.

The will of George Lobb of Bodmin, written in 1602, mentions the poor of Warleggan and his “cosen George Lobbe of Treverder” as well as the testator’s brother Richard Lobb, brother William Lobb, sister Martha Lobb and sister Mary Bligh, among others.[2]

A connection between Robert Lobb and Dorothy Lobb who married John Libby at Warleggan in 1594/95 is suggested by the fact that Robert Lobb and John Libby were both overseers of the will of John Philp of Warleggan in 1612. Dorothy, daughter of Richard Lobb, was baptised at Warleggan in 1562.

The parentage of Honor Arthur, wife of Silas Lobb, is unclear but she probably had a link to the Arthurs of St Ervan. The will of John Arthur who married Silas Lobb’s sister leaves a legacy to the poor of St Ervan. A possible baptism for Honor was at Padstow on 30 July 1604, as a daughter of James Arthur.[3] The will of a James Arthur of St Merryn was proved in 1621 but no copy appears to exist. Another possibility is that Honor (Arthur) Lobb was the daughter Honor named in the will of a widow, Honor Arthur, late of St Ervan, who died at Padstow on 24 December 1643. However, the will also names an Honor Tom who is not explicitly identified but who might be the same person as the testator’s daughter Honor. The lack of parish registers for St Ervan for the period along with the loss of some relevant wills makes it difficult to trace the family. A plausible husband for the testator Honor Arthur is William Arthur who was buried at St Ervan on 14 May 1627.
