BURGON
RICHARD BURGON of Doncaster, Yorkshire, died ca 1553.[1] He married BARBARA EARNING alias SHEEPSHANK.[2] She was buried on 27 July 1602 at Doncaster.[3] After the death of Richard Burgon, Barbara married, ca 1556, John Pettie[4] (see here). She later married, on 12 December 1575 at Doncaster, Robert Hemingfield,[5] and then on 4 May 1590 at Doncaster, John Awborn.[6]

Thomas’s will mentions, among others, his brother Hugh, “my syster Pettie” and “my brother Roberte Hemingefeild”, perhaps referring to Robert’s wife Barbara by her previous surname. Hugh’s will mentions, among others, his brother Thomas’s children and “my sister Awburne” as well as Edward, Alexander, John, Richard and Alice Pettie. The 1558 will of John Wilson of Skellow in the parish of Owston includes a legacy to a Barbara Pettie.

[7] Agnes is named in the 1601 will of her mother Barbara as “Agnes Cayton my daughter” and in the will of John Pettie, dated 26 Mar 1575 (Borthwick Institute), as “Agnes Burgon my doughter in lawe” (stepdaughter). John also leaves a calf to a Richard Burgon, but no relationship to him is stated. It is possible that Barbara’s husband Richard also had one or more children by an earlier wife.
